Recognizing Domestic Violence &
Family Abuse

Abuse is not always physical. It often starts quietly, aimed at completely controlling your life so that you feel too weak or isolated to leave.

Abuse includes:

Financial Control:

Not allowing you to have your own bank account, taking your paycheck, or making you ask for permission to spend any money.

Isolation:

Forbidding you from making friends, going to community events, or speaking to your family back home.

Coercive Control & Threats:

Constantly checking your phone, telling you what you can wear, insulting you, or threatening to cancel your visa or spouse-sponsored paperwork to force you to comply.

The most important legal fact you need to know:

Your sponsor or your husband cannot automatically deport you. If you are in Canada on a spouse-sponsored visa and you report domestic abuse to the police or a crisis line, your immigration status is not automatically revoked. The Canadian government has specific safety nets to protect victims of abuse, ensuring you can separate your legal status from an abusive partner safely.
